In Loving Memory of Gene Brandenburg
Gene Brandenburg, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed
away on January 31, 2024, at his home. He was 81.
Born on May 5, 1942 to Elizabeth and Walter Brandenburg, Gene spent his formative years in
Capitol Heights, Maryland. Fate played its hand when he grew up across the street from his
future wife, Amelia, whom he married in 1962, marking the beginning of a 61-year journey
together.
Gene served his country in the Air Force after high school. He was stationed in Alexandria,
Louisiana, and Okinawa, Japan. Gene and Amelia eventually settled in Brandywine, Maryland,
and later made La Plata, Maryland, their home for 50 years, where they raised four daughters.
Family was the cornerstone of Gene's life. Gene is survived by his cherished wife, Amelia
Brandenburg, his four daughters, Elizabeth Ann Jewell (Mark), Andrea Lynn Doyle (Chris),
Amelia Clara Woodburn (Matt), and Alison Dale Latimer (Jeff). His legacy lives on through his
ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.
Gene's generous nature was evident in his dedication to his family. He loved creating lasting
memories and would take his family on vacations to Virgin Gorda, B.V.I. and later to the Outer
Banks. Another tradition was the annual Winter Solstice gathering with his grandsons where
they would “partake of libations and speak as men do” around a blazing outdoor fire. He
cherished the time spent with family and was delighted when they would visit.
In addition to his parents, Gene is preceded in death by his brother, Dale Brandenburg, who
made the ultimate sacrifice serving in the Vietnam War.
As we mourn the loss of Gene Brandenburg, we also celebrate the rich tapestry of a life
well-lived, filled with love, laughter, and cherished moments. His memory will forever be etched
in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
To celebrate his life, a memorial service will be held on Friday, March 8, 2024 at 4:30pm at
Grace Lutheran Church in La Plata. Reception will follow in the Family Life Center of the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Grace Lutheran Church and
School.
