I am so sorry that I just saw the email announcing the departure of "Master of Drumming" M.A.D. Harold Cardwell. His wife, Teri Cardwell was a well-respected social work colleague. It was my pleasure to attend their send-off when they moved to Maryland for Harold's medical care. Enjoy links in the NUVO article below for some of M.A.D. Harold's music. https://www.nuvo.net/music/a-eulogy-for-mad-harold-cardwell-jazz-drumming-legend/article_414e6fc2-f0a0-11e7-b43c-d78ae72a66c3.html

I just received the news that my friend Harold has left this earth. Neighbor, friend, partner in crime. Kick ass pool player, born to drum. Irreverent. We would sit for hours and talk, watch Walker Texas Ranger and listen to Jazz. You did not step between Harold and his food or his truck. He had the most beautiful Lincoln Continental, white exterior red interior. He carved beautiful canes and out of wood. He appreciated a well crafted knife. He was a talented painter and mowed his own lawn and removed poison ivy. He was not allergic to poison ivy and was quick to help others. He was always up for a beer or a leisurely smoke. Harold impacted my life in ways he will never know. I have missed him and am sad I couldnt say goodbye. Terri, my condolences to you. I am thinking of you and my heart hurts for your loss. We lost a great one. I can't even describe the heaviness I feel. I am honored to have known and loved Mad Harold. Nicole Bock Yalowitz

I was first beginning to go to clubs in Indianapolis, IN in 1969. I was married to a Navy seaman who was in the waters right outside of Vietnam. Our baby had been born the year before in 1968. I couldn't wait to turn 21 to do the one thing I hadn't done yet which was going to a club, ordering a drink, and being really grown. Fortunately, that experience was richened by the exposure to The Grant Green Trio which was the first jazz band I'd ever seen live. I was hooked immediately. I became a regular at The 19th Hole, a small hole in the wall club that began my musical education live & in living color. There were no better educators than the musicians in regular residence at that hole in the wall--- Grant Green, guitar; Ronnie Foster, Hammond B3 Organ; & Mad Harold Cardwell, on the drums. While this posting is supposed to be a condolence to the family of Harold to mourn his transition from this life, I can't help but smile because Harold became like a brother, father, uncle to my sons, and an immensely classy guy to be around. I remember when he restored that old Mercedes Benz and how long he actually drove it. He actually made a set of his drums. I remember running into him and having long conversations. I remember him teaching my son about rhythms & baseball & other stuff that guys talk about. I remember being with him at the photo shoot for the Jazz musicians in Indianapolis in 2008. I will always remember Harold because he never forgot what being a friend really meant. He was indeed a rare individual . The universe has reclaimed his essence; his rhythm remains timeless.

Terri,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Mad's passing. My short list of great friends just got shorter. I will truly miss him. I wish I could have seen him more often when he was here. I have lots of recordings of Harold when he was at the Place to Start. I will always treasure them.

John: So good to hear from you. I know Harold always enjoyed your friendship and often talked about the times you had together. I didn’t have email or phone information to contact you personally. I would like to talk to you about copies of some of the recordings you have. Let me know how I might get in touch. Thank you for your warm thoughts.

Teri
