Ruth Wegner of Society Hill, Mt. Victoria, MD, died at the age of 95 on Saturday, October 13, 2018.
She was born Ruth Irene Hancock on December 31, 1922 in Indian Head, MD to the late Marvin Hancock and Ruthevene Thompson Hancock. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward Wegner, daughter, Linda Elaine Wegner Shobert, brothers, Kenneth Hancock, Roy Stanmore Hancock and James Louis Hancock.
Ruth is survived by her daughters, Virginia Wegner Mayer of Mt. Victoria, MD, Susan Wegner Gilman of King George, VA, sons-in-law, Thomas D. Mayer, and Julian D. Gilman, grandchildren Mary Virginia Mayer, Sarah Elizabeth Mayer and fiancé Chris Seidl, William Thomas Mayer and wife Jayna, and step-grandsons, Julian “Dean” Gilman, Jr. and Justin Shawn Gilman.
A 10th generation Charles County resident, Ruth was a graduate of Lackey High School, and worked at the Naval Explosive Ordinance Station in Indian Head, MD during WWII. She was a small business owner, housewife and loving wife and mother. She was a member of the Lady Jane Sewall Chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of Seventeen Century, the Port Tobacco Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. She was active at Christ Episcopal Church, Wayside Parish, where she served on the Ladies Guild, and annual fall dinners for many years.
Family will receive friends at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home, 211 St. Mary’s Avenue, La Plata, MD 20646 on Wednesday, October, 17, 2018 from 10 a.m. until time of service at 12 p.m. Interment will follow in Mount Rest Cemetery, La Plata, MD 20646.
