Barbara James Obituary

Barbara Ann James—a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, nurse, and friend was born on June 18, 1955, in Boston, Massachusetts, and peacefully passed away in her home in La Plata, Maryland, on May 3, 2025.

Barbara lived a life filled with compassion, grace, and quiet strength. In 1982, she married the love of her life, Phil James, and embraced not only a new chapter, but a new family. She stepped into the role of mother with a heart wide open, loving Phil’s children as her own and nurturing their home with devotion.

As a Registered Nurse, Barbara was the very embodiment of care and compassion. Her gentle but stern nature and steady presence made her a comfort to countless patients and a source of strength for her colleagues. Caring for others wasn’t just her profession—it was who she was.

At home, Barbara found joy in the simple but meaningful parts of life. She loved British television shows, the peaceful rhythm of the beach, and traveling to new places with Phil by her side. She also enjoyed cooking, often filling her home with the comforting aroma of a favorite dish. And on game days, she could be found watching Redskins football with Phil—cheering together in their shared tradition and camaraderie.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Gardner Baumann and Ann Buck (Cahill), her stepson Richard James, and her beloved granddaughter Corrine James. Though they are no longer with us, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with them now.

She leaves behind her devoted husband Phil, her loving daughter Heather Murphy (Bryan), stepson Alan James (Linda), her cherished sister Joan Baumann, brother Bill Baumann (Carlisle) and a legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Her love echoes in each of them.

Barbara’s family will gather for an intimate celebration of her life on her birthday, June 18, 2025—a fitting day to honor her.

Though we mourn her loss, we are grateful for the time we had and the memories we will carry. Barbara’s life was a quiet but powerful testament to love and resilience. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
