Carolyn was born in West Terre Haute, Indiana on October 14th, 1937. She was a graduate of La Plata High School in 1955 and went on to attend classes at Charles County Community College.
She met her husband, Johnny, on a blind date and they spent 67 years as husband and wife. They went on to have five children, Steve, Michael, Bruce, Joseph, and Kevin.
Carolyn was employed as a secretary at the Office of the Commandant, Headquarters Marine Corps prior to starting a family. She went on to work for and retired from Charles County Public Schools where she served as a librarian for Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School.
She was part owner and Secretary/Treasurer for Posey’s Market in LaPlata MD until relocating to Florida. Her chicken salad was renowned to all who frequented Posey’s.
She was an avid reader, loved to work jigsaw and word puzzles, traveled in her and Johnny’s motorhome extensively with friends Gary and Barbara Lyon and Jimboy and Betty Williams.
She loved country music, her cats, growing orchids and decorating her tree for every season of the year.
Carolyn was predeceased by her son Joseph and parents Roy and Genevieve Mitchell. She is survived by her husband John, her children, Steve (Debbie), Michael (Michelle), Bruce (Mary Susan), and Kevin, her siblings Janice Niblett and Roy Mitchell Jr. (Lilly) as well as 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Tuesday June 27, 2023 from 4 to 7 PM at the Arehart-Echols Funeral Home (211 St. Mary's Ave. LaPlata, MD 20646) A mass of Christian burial will be said on Wednesday June 28, 2023 at 10 AM at the St. Ignatius Church - Chapel Point ( 8855 Chapel Point Rd. Port Tobacco, MD 20677). Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Carmelite order at Carmel of Port Tobacco, 5678 Mount Carmel Road, La Plata, MD 20646-3625.
