Mary Cecilia (Celie) Matthews 91 of LaPlata, MD passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025 at St. Mary’s Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Leonardtown, MD surrounded by family. She was born June 2, 1934. She was the daughter of Nannie M. Lucas Hill and Joseph Earl Hill.
She married Martin Matthews in 1953.
In addition to her parents she is predeceased by her husband Martin Matthews; siblings, Mary Edith Winkler, James Earl Hill, Jr., Ruth Theresa Goldsmith, Agnes Gertrude Jameson, Thomas Randolph Hill; sister-in-law, Charlotte Ann Hill; nieces Donna Kay Hill Tzafaroglow, Judy Theresa Goldsmith; Nephews, Sammy Dorough, Jimmy Goldsmith.
Although she did not have children of her own. She was blessed with many generations of nieces and nephews that loved her dearly. In her life with Martin they enjoyed duck and geese hunting followed up by their nightly cocktails. She was a cat lover owning 6 at one time. Later in life she had her beloved dog Rocky to keep her company. She also found great enjoyment and relaxation doing word find books. But her greatest joy was family gatherings. She will be missed by family and the many lives she touched.
The family will receive friends on Saturday January 3, 2026 from 9 until her service time at 11 AM at the Arehart-Echols Funeral Home (211 St. Mary’s Ave. LaPlata, MD 20646). Interment to follow at the Mt. Rest Cemetery (LaPlata, MD).
Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Charles County (71 Industrial Park Dr. Waldorf, MD 20602) or the American Cancer Society (P.O. Box 6704 Hagerstown, MD 21741).
A celebration of her life will be held on her Birthday.
