Douglas Thompson Obituary

Douglas Harold Thompson, 83, of Piscataway, MD passed away at his home on September 26, 2021.

Doug was born in Peterson, MN on March 10, 1938 to the late Frederick and Vivian Thompson.  He also is predeceased by his brother, Frederick M. Thompson; sisters, Marion Cook (Bob) and Beverly Sawyer (Don).  Doug is survived by his wife, Julia; son, Chris Thompson (Becky); daughters, Karen L. Thompson and LeeAnne Downey (Justin); grandchildren, Chris, Jr. (Mandy), Jesse, Noah, Anthony (Kristyn), and Ryan; and great-grandchildren, Payton, Chase, Kaylee, Makinzee, and Mason. Doug was a kind-hearted and generous person who never met a stranger.

Doug served in the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Airman Fire Technician and was employed as a Firefighter for Prince George’s County, MD, until he retired in 1983. Upon his retirement, he worked for the Maryland Independent Newspaper for 25 years.  He was a member of the American Legion, Frederick, MD and the Masonic Lodge-Indian Head #54. Doug enjoyed woodworking and was known for making baby cradles for friends and family. He was a member of a Model A Club and also looked forward to spending time with his daily coffee group of 40+ years.

The family will receive friends at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home (211 St. Mary’s Ave., LaPlata, MD) on Monday, October 4, 2021 from 4PM to 7PM.  A Graveside Service will be held at Cedar Hill Cemetery (4111 Pennsylvania Ave., Suitland, MD) on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at 1PM.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doug’s memory to the Lymphoma Foundation (lymphomahelp.org).
