Edward "Dale" Howell, 90, passed away peacefully at his home on February 25, 2026, one year and one week after the passing of his wife, Barbara. Dale spent the last year of his life missing his wife and their life together.
Dale was born in Denver, Colorado on June 26, 1935 to Edward M Howell, Jr and Inez Faye (Stewart) Howell. He was an only child. Dale was a 1957 graduate of the University of Colorado with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He eventually moved to Washington, DC to work for the Atomic Energy Commission, and then transferred the Department of Defense at Andrews Air Force Base where he met Barbara. Dale then moved to the Pentagon where he traveled the world as part of the Explosive Safety Board, inspecting bomb sites to make sure they followed all safety protocols.
Dale is survived by 3 nieces, Judith Garner Simpson, Sharon Turner Nelson and Gail Turner Gromen. He is also survived by Nichelle Smith, who is considered a member of the family. Dale is also survived by many great nieces and nephews who cherished their time with Uncle Dale. He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, aunt and uncle and his cousins.
Dale spent his retirement enjoying life on his porch after spending so many years traveling for work. He and Barbara traveled to Australia, New Zealand, cruised the Caribbean, and visited his mother in Denver. Dale loved his golden retrievers, Bear, Abby and Rusty. He spent many hours walking them and taking them on rides around the county but especially to the bank because the dogs would get treats. After Rusty passed away he decided he couldn’t take care of another golden.
The family would like thank his caregivers who took wonderful care of Dale and Barbara and were with him until the end of his life, Cassie, Colleen, Linda, Marcia and Maria. They made it possible for him to live his life at his home which was important to him.
The family will receive friends on March 20, 2026 at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. with remembrances at 10:30 a.m. Burial is at 11:30 a.m. at St..Ignatius Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations to the Humane Society of Charles County, 71 Industrial Park Drive, Waldorf, MD 20602 in Dale’s name.
