Mary "Buttons" Stetler

Mary Irma “Buttons” Stetler passed away November 24, 2021, surrounded by her family. She was born May 2, 1945, in Washington D.C. to the late Edward Bernard and Alice Dolores (Brown) Shugart. She was raised in Capitol Heights on the family’s High View Farm where in the early years she worked at the family pony riding business and the High View Bus Company. It was at the farm that she met her best friend and soul mate Lewie whom she would wed at the age of 15 on April 17, 1961. Through the years she would have other jobs such as a hairdresser, secretary and for the past 34 years a school bus driver for Charles County Schools. This by far was her favorite, Miss Buttons loved spoiling her kids on holidays and making sure they made it to and from school safely every day. She was a rock to her two daughters Tandi and Krista and spent her middle years hauling them to rodeos, horse shows and youth and high school sporting events. She made sure her girls never missed a thing and always showed up looking good. She was a lifetime member of the American Professional Rodeo Association (APRA) where she was not only a competitor but also a rodeo secretary/timer and served as the Queen Pageant Coordinator for many years. For Buttons it was always about the kids and not just her own. Even after her girls were grown and had moved on, she would continue to serve as the Youth Advisor for the Southern Maryland Quarter Horse Association (SMQHA) for years where she was also a lifetime member and the Central Pennsylvania Youth Rodeo (CPYRA) Queen Pageant Coordinator. She would go back to competing in the Maryland Barrel Horse Association (MBHA) where she would win a state senior division championship with her beloved horse Stevie. In her later years her focus would turn to her grandchildren, Kelsey, Clayton, Jaycee and Kamie. No matter where or when she was there, never missing a youth or high school rodeo, a wrestling match or a baseball/softball, field hockey or basketball game. Whether it was cheering in the stands or spoiling all the youth rodeo kids with snow cones and popcorn they all knew “Nana”. Her grandkids were her world, and everyone knew it.  Her first great grandchild Rozlynn was her final blessing. Buttons enjoyed bowling in her younger years and any type of crafting, she never met a Halloween costume challenge she could not conquer. When it came to party planning there was no better, she thought of every detail. We loved and will miss everything about her.

She is preceded in death by her parents Eddie and Dolores Shugart, her brother Little Eddie Shugart (Bobbie) and her granddaughter Jaycee Vermillion. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years Lewie, her daughters Tandi Landolfi (David), Krista Vermillion (Bobby), grandchildren Kelsey King (Lavern), Clayton Vermillion and Kamie Landolfi, great granddaughter Rozlynn King, and sister Dee Shelton (George).

The family will receive friends on Friday December 10, 2021 at the New Life Church (The Dome) LaPlata, MD from 10 until service time at 1 PM.

Interment will be at a later date.
