Obituary for Suzanne Walker Cox (June 28, 1942 – June 23, 2026)

Eleanor Suzanne (Sue) Walker Cox, beloved wife of the late Bernard Hampton Cox Jr., died June 23, 2026 after prolonged illnesses.  She was the third child of John Ben Walker Sr. and Mary Ida Wilmer Walker.  She is survived by sons: Thomas Hampton Cox (Jennifer Flanagan Cox), Robert Holland Cox (Karen Hinchliffe Cox) and Jay Carlisle Cox (Mackenzie Craig Cox); grandchildren: Trevor Hampton Cox, Caitlin Eileen Cox and Robert Holland Cox Jr.; brothers: James Carlisle Walker Sr. and Thomas Mudd Walker Sr.  A third brother, John Ben Walker Jr., has passed away.

Sue was a lifelong resident of La Plata, Maryland.  She grew up in the center of this small town in the historic Sydney E. Mudd House. She attended Sacred Heart School, now known as Archbishop Neale School (ANS), from 1st through 12th grade and was Valedictorian in her senior year of high school.  She attended Sacred Heart Church and was very involved in the activities of the church.  All three of her sons served as alter boys at Sacred Heart.  She also served on the board of the Hawthorne Country Club.  One of her proudest accomplishments is getting a beautiful large gazebo built at “The Club”. 

In her younger years, she was involved in the Charles County Garden Club and enjoyed success in flower arrangement design contests at the annual county fair.  When her kids were younger, she cherished summer family vacations to Myrtle Beach and Bethany Beach with many other La Plata families.  These families grew to be dear and lifelong friends.  The bonds between them still exist today.  Sue’s love for her family, friends and community was woven into a fabric of pride and gratitude for everything in her life and the town she loved.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 30th at Arehart-Echols Funeral Home (211 St. Mary’s Avenue La Plata, MD 20646) from 4:00 – 7:00 pm.  Funeral Mass will be at Sacred Heart Church (201 St. Mary’s Avenue La Plata, MD 20646) on Wednesday, July 1st at 10:00 am.  Online condolences can be made to the family at www.arehartechols.com.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Hospice of the Chesapeake (hospicechesapeake.org).
